Is this a widely understood reference, or a personal theory, JFK? Also you said "scene/character composition" (not "character position") so I based my answer on that. Is the Mount Rushmore pose that happens twice a film reference most people miss or something?

yeah thats it. but you took all the fun out of it . no its not a personal theory, i said it a bit differently to try to spell it out. so youve never seen the wild bunch by sam peckinpah? same shot. why was it done twice? i have no idea.
if we want to be all inclusive, we could also include audrey in the closet as a reference to BV.
and i just remembered, william holden was a main character in the wild bunch, and he was also in sunset blvd., another of TP's noir precedents, mainly for the fact of starting off the story with finding a dead body. tho sunset has popped up more explictly in other lynch works, like MD and IE.

The name Gordon Cole is also a Sunset Boulevard reference, but I'm guessing you already knew that.
