Nefud, I want you to watch the Bill O'Reilly Factor No Spin Zone with me.

"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it, don't wait for it, just let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee. Like this."  -Dale Cooper

Fine.  Be that way.  We can watch Sean Hannity instead.

I'll give credit to Obama for pushing faith-based initiatives. I think it's a fine thing. From what I understand, Obama's plan wouldn't be much different than what Bush did. I rememer people up in arms about the prostelyzing, but there were restrictions there for Bush's. I don't know how many restrictions Obama will add but I'm guessing it's more politics/talk than it actual change.

It comes down to this - If you're taking taxpayer money for anything, you shouldn't be pushing for any doctorine, theory, and or belief system in any aspect.

The bill doesn't have to be perfect, BUT it's not even NEAR PERFECT. We rushed into this bill saying that it had to be done otherwise hell fire and brimstone would rain down on us. Back in the early 80s when Reagan's presidency started, they were in worse situation than we are now, and they took 9 months to figure out their bill! and yet, we took 1 month? I'll even throw on 2 more months (November and December) to that - so 3 months.

Trust me - I would love for it to work. But after seeing only $52/mo tax cuts, and some stimulus checks later this year and then again next year which people will just pay down debt or stash away as we all did last year (Kelly and I didn't - we went on a cruise!), it won't help any. There's just not enough long-term job creation - that even economic "experts" are saying won't help in the scheme of things.

Maybe all the talk of the pork-barreling was just talk. Since no one actually had time to read the bill, no one really knows what's in it in the end, and we can only hope....

Speaking of poop taxes:

amen, there's a roaring fire and they're grabbing liquids and pouring them on, we can only hope they reached for the water and not the gasoline....wait that's a terrible metaphor. but you get the idea.

whether they reach for water or gasoline - one thing is for sure, someone is going to be paying ot cleanup what the flood or fire leaves behind

if economy starts to improve in the next two years, expect taxes to go up dramatically! and if it ain't taxes, it will be inflation, and we don't want either to happen right now. That talk about taxing the rich and the rich being somewhere around 250,000 will suddenly get knocked down to about 100,000 which is far from "rich."

i dunno, my household makes about 100,000 and i feel pretty damn wealthy most days. what with owning my own home, not starving to death, cable tv, internet access, all that jazz. compared to the rest of the world i'm rich as all hell

but yeah, that's a LITTLE low to start taxing the shit out of people. i don't think we could keep our lifestyle if we were taxed 15% more or something

Yeah, when you look at the overall picture, 100K may sound rich and is a lot more money than in other countries or regions of the US. But 100K in Los Angeles is nothing. depends where you live.

OSHA's presence didn't exactly prevent that problem, either. Or nip it in the bud. The product was voluntarily recalled. Think about ABC vs Food Lion. These giant organizations just can't be everywhere at once. Think of all the jobs privatized food monitoring would create.

Check out the FDA's food defect action levels to see how much maggot, droppings, rot, parasite, mildew- even cigarette butts- the gov lets you eat: http://www.cfsan.fda.gov/~dms/dalbook.html

that's cute and all but people actually died, it's not a fucking "correction in the market." more actual oversight from a potent authority would do some good, not less

Yes, I'd much rather have to personally test every fucking thing I eat or put on my body to make sure it won't kill me...

in right-wing land, everyone has the time and money to do just that, but not before paying to drive on the roads, managing their stock portfolio in place of social security, and becoming a millionaire (we're all going to, that's why we MUST PROTECT THE RICH FROM HIGH TAXES even if it means the downfall of the economy ARRRRGGHH!!). and if you can't do all these things, you're just not grabbing your bootstraps hard enough

Oh please....the peanut butter company's issues go all the way back to Clinton days. Has nothing to do with right-wing or left-wing.

Ok then, disregarding that specific example, are you now attempting to claim that deregulation and privitization as far as the eye can see isn't one of the right's fondest dreams?

"clinton did it too!" doesn't excuse terrible policies ever

The dems certainly don't deserve gold stars or anything, but the GOP has been actively trying to weaken most federal oversight agencies.  They know they can't just get rid of the whole EPA or FDA or FEMA, but if they starve them enough they will become so ineffective that the public will eventually call for them to be terminated all together.  This strategy has been working pretty well except for the fact that there are actual problems in the world and for big problems most people actually want the government to do something.

My point is that when push comes to shove, it's ALL RHETORIC.

Dems aren't actually trying to do anything. It's all talk. They will talk about how the mean ol GOP is doing deregulation, but when they have a chance to do something about it, they do nothing. thus me bringing up Clinton. President has the abilty to do some of this through executive orders without the need for Congress.

GOP has been hammered by the Dems regarding lack of oversight, and yet when finally Dems have a chance to do something about it, they don't do anything either. That's my point.

It's just a bunch of political games and rhetoric. The sooner we all realize that the Dems and GOP don't have our general interest in mind, the sooner we can actually do something about it. Remember, they work for us, they are using OUR money (it's not govt money - it's ours) and the sooner American people remember that (or figure that out) the better off we will all be.

Until then, grab those bootstraps because neither party cares one iota about the average American. It's all power games and power grab.

i agreed with the majority of this post, but i still think it's up to us to care about each other, whether it's that piece of chicken i bought that homeless guy last week or being in favor of some kind of welfare system, or whatever. i really hope none of us* are so jaded that it's time for a "fuck you, i've got mine" mentality

*on the board, not in the world at large, that's way too much to hope for :)

Nefud, why take more money away from people that have worked their tails off TO EARN IT THEMSELVES and give it to other people who haven't done anything to deserve it?
