| QUOTE:wow, another cross over. from rock to country, or country rock, or whatever. don't like how the bands are doin now. |
Gee, I hope you're being ironic here. Modern music is such a result of crossbreeding that a narrow-minded purist attitude is nearly unthinkable, unless you're very naive, or in denial. All of it derives from blues. Whites turned their blues into bluegrass & country, jazz is blues with a classical pedigree, then various permutations (swing, Western swing, R&B, soul), including the Brits doing their take on it (Beatles, Stones, Who, Yardbirds, etc.). Elvis mixed country with blues, Chuck Berry put a whiter spin on R & B, & into the '60s & beyond everything was fair game to everyone. Should the Beasties be banned from doing their take on rap, a black artform? Should Johnny Cash not be allowed to cover NIN, Depeche Mode & Soundgarden? And music from the British Isles should only be native folk & classical strains? There's nothing pure about the RHCPs. They're a mix of punk, funk, jazz, blues, rap, rock & whatever else. And the Police are a similar cross-breeding. I say YEA to crossing over!! It's too late to stop now, as it's been going on since before ANY of us were born...

Hope I'm not being completely ignored here (crazy old man & your wacky "theories"). The Chicks won album of the year because it's FANTASTIC (& Chad should feel blessed to've been asked by Rubin to play on it). And Stewart Copeland is such a mutt crossover guy, I mean his 2 major influences seem to be reggae & jazz (he's neither Jamaican or an American black). As for his use of rock (and/or roll), this was again stolen from the American negro (ever hear of rhythm & blues?), so again, where does he come off?! Stewie, I believe you need to discover your true roots: pick up the bagpipes, blondie!!!

I agree with what you say about cross overs but not with this: | QUOTE: All of it derives from blues. |
How does Revolver come out of blues?... Magical Mystery Tour?.. early Pink Floyd?... Electric Light Orchestra?
Many, many things derived from blues and all you mentioned is true (and I like blues and its children!). But there is a big branch of rock music which was born of a different musical tradition that blues.

| QUOTE: You know, Karen Carpenter played the drums...rather well I might add... and me and Rush can't believe nobody has mentioned Mike Portnoy yet!
Also I like Meg White from the white stripes she is good. Portnoy is beyond good though. he's feckin' amazing. |
I agree about Portnoy. He really is amazing.
Sometimes when i listen to Dream Theater I only listen to the incredible drums from Portnoy.
Another one of my favourites is Scott Rockenfield / Queensrÿche.
