The douchiness seemed to me a deliberate story choice to show how Kirk grew up without the influence of his father and the spectre of Starfleet hanging over him. Again, that "alternate timeline" business tweaks things.

This film, as I see it, was meant to be the event that "breaks Kirk in", as Spock mentioned, and gets him to buckle down and become the more mature Kirk we know and love. Now, if the sequel just continues the same smug, apple chomping antics as this one, I'll be annoyed.

And thus begins my beef with the "alternate timeline". To me, this film isn't Trek. It has taken everything we know as Trek and tossed it out the damn window using a cheesy plot device (the most flagrant abuse of the "time travel" plot ever), and now they have an excuse to make Kirk a complete douchebag. Because if you recall, Kirk was nothing like this. He was originally referred to as a "stack of books with legs" when he was at the academy. He was very bright and scholarly, and far less reckless. In fact, it is often joked that Picard was the more brazen personality in his academy years than Kirk, even though when they became captains, the roles seemed to become reversed with Picard becoming more disciplined and Kirk becoming more rebelious.

In the aspect of being a Trek film, this movie comes off as more of a parody than anything else. And unfortunately I think Galaxy Quest did it better.

My roommate just pointed out to me that perhaps my problem isn't with the character but with the actor...and I have to admit...I don't like Chris Pine. I think he has the look but I just don't care for him much. I like all the other actors though. And I think it's a fucking crime that they made Uhura such a throwaway character. They went through all the trouble of tweaking timeline and history to get the entire original crew together, and then they just kind of waste that by not putting enough meat there. I get that they probably didn't want to overload the film with too many meaty characters up front, but then they could have solved that by not including so many of the original characters right away. They could have saved a few for the next film. Oh well.

Folks, you really should read Amanda's blog entry on her site about the NuTrek.  It made me fear for my life.  Ever since, I have been making sure all doors and windows are locked at all times and also watching out for people following me at night.

LOL You make me sound like a monster. For the record, it wasn't about the film. It was about the new influx of twatfaced Trek fans who are only falling in love with Trek NOW because it's been made all pop-culture mainstream plasticky a la anything from The CW network.

You made very valid points and I respect your opinion on just about everything.  It still scared me.

I'd offer to hold you until the scary goes away, but I'm pretty sure you'd just try to cop a feel.

In a shocking twist, I allow the girl to make the first move.  Is this good or bad?

What would Gene Roddenberry say if he saw the NuTrek?

I'm sure he'd be as impressed as anyone by the effects and general 'splodeyness of it, but considering that he felt the films should be more like the direction taken in Star Trek: The Motion Picture (more cereberal with a sort of 2001-ish feel) I think the shallow plot would have left him pretty disappointed. I loved the film, but it was certainly lacking in the idea department. The best Trek always gave you something to mull over while you enjoyed the big adventure stuff.

completely unfettered gene roddenberry (the motion picture, TNG) is almost as abysmal as completely unfettered lynch (inland empire)

Trekfest in Riverside, IA June 26th and 27th.  George Tokay, Uhuru (sp?) and some other star that I didn't catch will be making an appearance.

I was wondering does anyone remember that show that Shatner had on the scifi channel where he went to Riverside and pretended to be shooting a movie there?  It was a big prank and I guess the townspeople got a little bent out of shape about it.  Does anyone remember what it was called?
