U2 (read Bono) thinks he is so important - they really do suck and have since the 80s Metallica used to be legit thrash metal (Kill Em All, Master, Justice, Lightning) and then sold out with the Black album and had their balls removed The Allman Brothers Band kicks ass - great drinkin music and they have some wicked 30 minute jams Ozzy Osbourne really did rock and scare people back before Sharon took over his life and possessed him. Linkin Park is the wussiest band since the dawn of time.

I think Tom Petty writes the best rock and roll. His music has been consistently great for 30 years as well as his live shows. And he manages to do it without looking ridiculous like some aging rockers. Perhaps this isn't really an unconventional opinion. I'm not sure I've ever heard anyone say they hate Tom Petty. He writes great songs to sing along to. I'm quite excited that Depeche Mode is confirmed as one of the headliners for Lollapalooza 2009. I'm making the train ride to Chicago this year. Morphine is the best music to get laid to.

I fully agree with MayRay on Tom Petty. I count his Highway Companion album as one of the best CDs released this decade. You can love it or you can hate it, but you have to admit that Traveling Wilburys is one of the coolest experiments by a group of fantastic artists ever conceived.

What amazes me is that the Wilburys were totally an unplanned kismet sort of thing. They all happened to be in England at the time and went over to George's house to help him out with the B side to his single. The record company said it was too good to be a B side. Big Band music puts me in a good mood.

Unconventional? If that's what you want to call it. There doesn't seem to be much love for U2 here. I think their work up through Unforgettable Fire was listenable. Then they went hollywood. If you haven't seen it, find the Under a Blood Red Sky DVD and give that a look. Bob Dylan = epitome of incomprehensibility. I find Neil Young's work less likely to make me stabby.
Nirvana? I like two of their songs. Soundgarden was vastly superior. The Wilburys were pure magic, but any star that bright was likely to burn out more quickly. I'll surely think of more later.

Radiohead and Portishead should make more beautiful, miserable music together. The White Stripes make some great songs for 2 people inside a garage. Gorillaz are basically Blur on helium.

Skinny Puppy are 90% unlistenable since they reformed. Same with Hall & Oates. And I say this as a fan of both. Kiss was a great pop band, they only started to suck when they started trying to be a rock band. Things got iffy post-Ace, but Creatures of the Night still had some strong writing. By Lick it Up, though, the make-up was gone, half the band were rentals, Gene had totally stopped trying to write a half decent song, and they seemed to decide that adolescent metalheads with no taste would be their target consumer niche.

I have to disagree with you a bit on this one. Kiss was always a rock band. They did a couple of pop albums in the late 70's and ver early 80's. Once they went back to rock, they consecutivly put out three great albums: Creatures of the Night, Lick it Up, and Animalize. Just listen to their first 3 albums, and tell me that aint rock! The reason why their albums were sub-par in the mid to late 80's is because Gene was off in Hollywood, doing his crappy acting. Paul had to hold the group together all by himself, basically. They put out one of their best albums ever in the 90's, Revenge. Anyway, I know everyone is entitled to their opinion, and that is mine.

LOL, thats a lot of peoples reaction when I tell them I'm a big Kiss fan. They were considered a joke in the 70's by some because of their extravagant stage show(which is unbelievable,if you've never seen them). Then in the 80's they were lumped in with all the flash in the pan "hair" bands. If your looking for music and lyrics that are thought provoking then Kiss isnt for you. They are just a good-time rock n' roll band, and they got me through some troubled adolescent years. Sure, they may not be a very cerebral band, and yes, all their songs are about sex, but they will always hold aspecial place in my heart. I remember I got my first Kiss album , when I was in kindergarden(AliveII).

I guess I'm in the minority here as well. I thought U2 was pretty good in the 80's. Even though I didnt really listen to them that much at the time. I always liked Nirvana. I always liked Soundgarden as well. - How can you not dig Chris Cornell's voice? The Wibury's were awesome!! I also liked the Highwaymen.(Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, and Kris Kristofferson)

Nefud, I'll try to hook you up with some linkage, but Gene's people are pretty ruthless about scouring for streamable versions of original recordings... In general, though, I'm partial to Dressed to Kill (1975) as an early album ("Love Her All I Can" is a fantastic song), but Hotter Than Hell (1974) is probably a better recommendation; Destroyer (1976) is good mid-period; Unmasked (1980, which isn't when they unmasked) is a pure pop album, and has some pretty good songwriting within that context. I'll stop there, but they've released another dozen or so albums since. The Double Platinum compilation is a good sampling of everything they did up until their disco album, and Alive (the first one) is a classic live album.
And Lynchman, I stand by my "pop band" statement, but I'm delighted someone else cares enough to debate it.

I thought of a few more... Oasis is much better than their detractors give them credit for, but not nearly as good as their fanatics think they are. "Pleasant Valley Sunday" by The Mokees is a great song. I don't get the fascination with The Clash. I think "Veronica" is one of Elvis Costello's best songs.

Thank you, always a pleasure to talk Kiss and talk to Kiss fans.
Nefud, my personal recommendations are: KISS(1974), Hotter Than Hell(1974), Alive!(1975), Love Gun(1977), Creatures of the Night(1982), Lick it Up(1983), Revenge(1992). I could actually go on and on. If your new to Kiss though, I recommend Alive! the most.

I've never been an Oasis fan, but I heard Don't look back in anger on the radio today and that is still a good song.
