| QUOTE: "Pleasant Valley Sunday" by The Mokees is a great song. I don't get the fascination with The Clash. |
the monkees (or whoever actually wrote/sang their songs) are really underrated, lots of good songs there!
i can't help you if you dont like their music, but the deal with the clash is intelligent politics and really good music all in the same place. plus they took a lot of finantial blows just to better serve their fans. one of the few rock and roll bands who (at least seem to) truly not give a fuck about the establishment in a constructive and sincere way

I never liked Styx. Rap/Hip-Hop was at it's best from about 1988 - 1995 I'm a huge Sinatra fan. True punk rock died about 1983... Thankfully, so did disco.

My initial thought when listening to Mommy and Daddy. That's a good song.

Oooooooooohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh I hate Styx almost as much as I hate Coldplay!
Dusty Springfield has one of the best female voices. I could listen to her all day, even if most of her songs are sugary pop. Although, Son of a Preacher Man is my kareoke song.
Joy Division was a brilliant band. I am glad the surviving members went on to form one of my favorites, New Order. Blue Monday is the greatest song ever recorded.
I like Kings of Leon but won't buy their albums, that's what my friends are for.
Interpol has something to them that is just unbelievable. I can't put my finger on it but love their music.
Lords of Acid is a great band, or whatever you would call them. Even though everything is about sex and drugs their live shows are something that you will never forget. And the music is great to workout to. I actually like Linkin Park.
I really hope that the rumors that Ryan Adams is giving up music (heard its something to do with the fact that he just married Mandy Moore) aren't true. He's as close to country as I get.

I love the Foo Fighters but am too cheap to buy all their cds - can you say greatest hits, Dave? I actually like a few Monkee songs as well. I dig Frankie Valie & The Four Seasons and Frankie Lymon and the Teenagers Judas Priest is highly underrated. Rolling Stones should have hung it up after Tatoo You. Def Leppard should have hung it up after Pyromania.

It irks me when the music execs decide its an awesome idea to translate a popular song into English. 99 Luftballoons is sooooooo awesome in German and sucks in English.

Yes. I guess part of it is I am fluent in German and would rather listen to a song in German. I am also a bit of a purest, I hate dubs in movies as well, rather have the subtitles.
Why is it that we translate German and French and some others but not others like Icelandic? Although, if Sigur Ros was translated I think it would make me cry.

The pop station here, plays the german versions of those songs. I've only heard the english versions a few times each. Much prefer the originals.

I must agree with Frankie Valie & The Four Seasons and Interpol. I like both alot. Another extremely underrated band are I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness. With a name like that it's not surprising really. They're of a similar ilk to Interpol and Editors but a little heavier on electronics, and have a much "darker" sound without being too lame or pretentious. They're Canadian. And awesome. I've lost interest in the Foo Fighters since "The Colour And The Shape". Everything after that seems a bit "safe" if you get my drift. Like Feeder or The Manic Street Preachers. It's not offensively bad, just terribly plain.

The Monkees are great. I don't know who wrote all their songs, but I know Carol King wrote Pleasant Valley Sunday. I think she is pretty amazing. I'm not sure a Nirvana/Foo Fighters comparison is fair. The Foo Fighters have had a much longer career. I prefer Nirvana but that is the music of my generation so it has some sentimental value. I live for the college radio station in my town. Great things I have heard- Arctic Monkeys, Santagold, The Virgins, also some fantastic underground hip hop.

I wish Columbus's college station was good but I only hear crap that is unappealing on it. Damn OSU!
I also believe that the Minneapolis music scene is very underrated. Some great bands have come out of there: Jayhawks, Replacements, Husker Du, Soul Asylum, Geardaddys...just to name a few.

Agreed 150%. It's a fuckin' great song (written by duo Carole King and Gerry Goffin, who also wrote another fantastic Monkees tune, "Porpoise Song").

And Mick Jones is still doing it in a new band called Carbon/Silicon, (with Tony James from Generation X). Their first album came out in 2007, called The Last Post.
Listen here: http://www.last.fm/music/Carbon%252FSilicon. Plus, I think you can download the album for free on their website.

Didn't Neil Diamond write for them as well?

Yes. He didn't write specifically FOR them...but he wrote songs that they chose to record. Well, he actually wrote them for himself, but at the time the Monkees were the hot ticket, so they recorded their own versions of those songs and theirs were released first. I think there were just the four songs that I know of (I'm a Believer; A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You; Love to Love; and Look Out Here Comes Tomorrow). You can totally tell they're Neil Diamond songs because they just sound like him. Shit, "A Little Bit Me, A Little Bit You" sounds like the little brother of Diamond's "Cherry, Cherry".

I love the Monkees. I used to watch the tv show every day after school. I listen to their greatest hits all the time.

Thanks, I thought it might have been something like that. I remember seeing his name in parenthesis after a few of the songs on a greatest hits cd. Even though they didn't write most of their songs, there's no denying that they had many memorable pop hits.
For some reason, I feel like shoplifting your Winona Ryder avatar.

Heh, shoplift away. :) Geoffr1111 made it for me back in 2002 out of images I supplied him and I've never changed it. People think I either have a Winona fetish or that I look like her. It's quite amusing. :) Let's see...some more musical opinions: I have never ever understood what anyone found so special or interesting about Liz Phair I would probably pay to listen to Beck fart through a cardboard tube for an hour, he's still just that damn cool. (Same with David Bowie) I really wish that Shannon Hoon hadn't died...I think I would like to have seen what Blind Melon could have done with itself beyond the few songs they're known for (or for those who really are just mainstream radio folks, the ONE song they're known for). When Conor Oberst is on, he's ON. I think it's a travesty that more people don't listen to Bright Eyes.

I have a soft place in my heart for over the top early 80s hair metal. I love the cartoonish album covers, lyrics, and stage theatrics. Slaying dragons, evil stuff, spandex, smoke and fire, big hair, chicks in mini skirts writhing in cages, makeup, excess, booze, everything. Dio and Iron Maiden fit this description (as does Spinal Tap).
"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it, don't wait for it, just let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee. Like this." -Dale Cooper

Fair enough. I absolutely admit to knowing next to nothing about the band. For me it's always a question of whether the music speaks to me or not, and the music of The Clash just never did. But your explanation at least gives me a little perspective on what all the hype's about. Thanks.
