look i'm not arguing they are all listed under the same name in tv guide or something, i'm just saying they are similar enough in both origin and finished product that one does not, in fact, have to differentiate a favorite. it's all star trek.

"At the time that TNG and DS9 were released on disc, I refused to pay the exorbitant asking prices ($125-150 a pop anyone?)."
Even though it didn't make my top 5, I'm a big Trek fan, but I simply refuse to pay the ridiculous prices they're still asking for the DVD sets. Even now, they're like seventy bucks a pop where I live. Trying to collect every season of every series at those prices? I'm not made of latinum...Everything used to be expensive when they first came out, but most shows have come way down. The X-Files was like a hundtred dollars per season when it it first came out, but a few months back I picked up the entire series for twenty dollars per season. Why Trek stubbornly stays so high is beyond me... I do have all ten movies on DVD. They were very reasonably priced. On another note, I'm surprised to see how much TP/Buffy overlap there is. Glad to see I'm not alone.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer is awesome. I think most people would like it on here. If you can make it past a shaky Season One, it's all good from there on out. Each season is like a self contained series. I love it. It is like Trek except with vampires, demons, etc.

Yeah, Season One is definitely the weak link. The only really strong episodes are "Angel", "Never Kill A Boy On The First Date" and "Witch". With an honorable mention to "The Puppet Show" for the absurd humor.

In college I was a religious viewer of Buffy and Charmed. I never did get into Angel though. The Spike storyline always interested me more than the Angel one so when the Angel show came out I caught about 2 eps and just couldn't get into it. I was sad when Buffy was taken off the air and kept up with Charmed. I love that show and love that it's in reruns on TNT.
I also forgot to mention NCIS. I love that show. I have a weird crush on Mark Harmon though so I am sure that has somethign to do with it. I am really bummed how most of the shows I love end up getting cancelled. I love Pushing Daisies and that's done after some summer eps. Men in Trees was good as well and that got canned. Dead Like Me has some of the greatest dry humor I have seen in awhile and that only lasted 2 seasons. Dead Like Me is one that I wish would have gotten at least 3 seasons to tie up loose ends. But there is the movie that recently came out...I need to see that....
I also quite enjoy Dexter and Psych. I wish that Dexter was on regular tv and I don't miss an ep of Psych.
X-Files used to be a favorite of mine until I saw Dr. Who. I just love that show!
Some honorable mentions are: Ghost Hunters, Eureka, Eleventh Hour, Destination Truth, MI-5 (in US, Spooks in UK) (wish A&E would continue to run this, I loved it when it was ran a few years back.), Law and Order Criminal Intent and Special Victims, the original has lost a bit of it for me...

Anthony Stewart Head is the shiznit. The Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Six musical Episode "Once More With Feeling" is one of the finest hours in television history. I can listen to the original soundtrack or watch it a million times. I know it word for word. Manly man who likes this musical LOL

smeds-Much like Buffy, Angel's first season is the weakest. Consider giving it another try, it gets so much better. coolsprings-"Once More With Feeling" is one of my favorite episodes of any series. When I'm having a bad day I'll often pop the DVD in and watch it for a pick-me-up. Works every time. I even listen to the soundtrack. Best line- Willow(singing): "I think this line's mostly filler." The Season Five episode "The Body" is one of the most remarkable hours of television ever produced. I can't honestly say I enjoy watching it (it's too real...too raw) but I admire it greatly, especially when I learned that it's actually based on something that Joss Whedon experienced. How someone can just open a vein like that and let their pain spill out onto the page is amazing. I envy his ability to do that. I think Dexter is awesome, too, but I'm way behind. Haven't gotten around to Season Two yet.

I was pissed when Men in Trees got canceled but I have to say, the lame "Patrick loses his memory and becomes a douchebag!" storyline really swung the tone of the series around a little too much. Having it end up with Annie moving on (within, what, six eps?) and Patrick getting himself back in the end but Annie still rejecting him...that was just too much for me. But overall I still loved it. :( I guess at least we got two seasons out of it, unlike Wonderfalls and My So-Called Life, two other series that I adore and that just barely missed my top five.
Dead Like Me...the last ep of that 2nd season was brilliant. I was furious when it didn't get renewed, much in the same way I was furious about Carnivale being canceled after we got that AWESOME second half of that second season. The Dead Like Me movie is so-so...Reggie got moderately hawt in the meantime, and the premise behind the film is interesting, but parts of it fell flat. Still...I would rather have that movie than nothing at all! DLM is still DLM no matter what. :) I always said it was like the flip-side of Six Feet Under. Where SFU was about how the living dealt with death in a melancholy manner, DLM was about the dead dealing with the living in a darkly wry manner. *sigh* Miss it. And I'm with Fud. Regardless of splits in the timelines or whatnot, I really see Trek as one whole entity. I reiterate, I don't think you can really enjoy Trek as a whole if you don't consider all the parts of it.

Twin Peaks, about which not much more needs to be said here. Northern Exposure, which had some of the best character development and general writing of anything I've seen, and which I would totally buy on DVD if they hadn't ruined it by refusing to pay for the music rights. Sherlock Holmes, Jeremy Brett edition -- there is no other Holmes for me, even in the late episodes where he's really sick and they're trying to cover it with scarves and bad makeup. The Simpsons / Futurama -- I know it's not fair to group them, but I don't love them enough to give up two spaces. The Larry Sanders Show, which was one of those shows that was too clever for its own good but managed to survive anyway. Honorable mention: Python, On the Air, Made In Canada, Harvey Birdman, Black Books, South Park, Fishing With John, Kids in the Hall, The Rockford Files

Nuart, you about have my list 1. Twin Peaks 2. Alfred Hitchcock Hour/Presents- excellent stuff, funny and creepy at the same time 3. Twilight Zone- old black and white ones 4. The Munsters- so much funnier than the Adams Family 5. Gilmore Girls- great show but I don't expect much love for it. Witty dialogue, quirky small town, and I like the fact that it gave young girls a positive role model as opposed to most shows geared towards teenage girls. I would like to throw out an honorable mention to AbFab. I laugh until I cry watching this.

I have had Northern Exposure Season 1 on DVD for a good while now, and have never got round to watching it. I will do soon though, i see so many good things said about it.
Also, good call on South Park and Black Books. I love those shows. On a sidenote, i was shocked when i went to New York City in January just how many UK shows were available on DVD in the shops there. 'Allo 'Allo, Are You Being Served, Rising Damp, Inspector Morse(!), Miss Marple(!!!!!), Minder, etc. Some of those shows are just so overwhelmingly "English" that even i struggle with them.

And even more impressive was that they could sustain it when Coach left, and Diane left etc. The balance in dynamics is something they often get wrong in Frasier. Too much Frasier/Niles snobbishness can just be really grating. But in Cheers, that never happens because there's so many funny characters to bounce off each other.

Speaking of great ensemble comedies, what about M*A*S*H? It didn't make my top five, but I love it. I've seen every episode multiple times and it's one of those shows that just never gets old.

M*A*S*H is onle of those shows that my dad made me watch as a child (Star Trek included) and I didn't appreciate until I was older. Now I am addicted to it and watch it all the time. Great show.
