What the title says.

"Harry, I'm going to let you in on a little secret. Every day, once a day, give yourself a present. Don't plan it, don't wait for it, just let it happen. Could be a new shirt at the men's store, a catnap in your office chair, or two cups of good, hot, black coffee. Like this."  -Dale Cooper

1. Charmed
2. CSI (Las Vegas)
3. Dr. Who
4. How I Met Your Mother

I think posters should list Twin Peaks if it is a fav because I bet it is not everyone's favorite on here.

Yeah you're probably right but, for me, it's far beyond comparison with any other show.  There hasn't been anything that has come close to it...so that's why I listed 5 others but Peaks is my all time fave.

Trek is actually 6 different series.  You can only pick one.  It makes it a hell of a lot more interesting than giving just a generic answer.  I am always curious about which ONE is a person's fave and why.

I personally think that Voyager is the best with Deep Space Nine a close second.

can't help you, that's as ridiculous as saying i can only pick one doctor's run on doctor who. it's arbitrary as hell

Star Trek is not one long series.  Your answer is invalid.  Next.

Wow, a lot of Trekkies on here.  Seems like I'm the only one here, who don't "get it".

My dad is a big fan of the shows, and I've tried to get into a few of them as well, but for some reason I just can't get into them.  Is the original the best?  As a non-trekkie, which do you think would be the best one to watch?

Depends on your tastes.  I prefer Voyager because I liked the storylines and that they were stuck in the delta quaderant. I like them all but that's the one that I dig the most.

1. Twin Peaks (Obviously, or I wouldn't be here) :

I won't bother to justify that one, as we have a whole forum here for discussing TP

2. Buffy The Vampire Slayer:

I agree with evrything you said 100%. I don't know how many times I've had to put up with people who look down their nose at this show smirking when I bring this up, but I digress. Everything about this show is better than it has any right to be: Writing, acting, directing. It has (along with my #3 choice below) one of the deepest, most compelling and involving mythologies ever presented on TV. And it holds up to many repeat viewings, as I can personally attest.

3. Angel:

More than a Buffy spinoff, it's more like Buffy's darker and meaner older brother. Buffy's signature metaphors of adolesence and young adulthood have their counterpoint in Angel's metaphors of adulthood, maturity, responsibility and parenthood. The mythology gets even deeper here, particularly in the brilliant Season Four. Part of Angel's strength lies in Joss Whedon's underrated collaborator Tim Minear, with whom he co-created...

4. Firefly:

Yep, there's a trend here. I'm an unabashed Joss Whedon fanboy  .      Firefly -basically a gritty Western set 500 years in the future with space taking the place of the frontier-is what the "Star Wars" prequels should have been: Dark and edgy, but with a biting sense of humor and slam-bang action. Most of all, it's just plain fun.

5. American Gothic:

This short-lived series from creator Shaun Cassidy (Yes, the one from The Hardy Boys) shares a few things in common with Twin Peaks. Like TP, it revolves around the weird doings in a small rural community. Less stylish and more overtly supernatural than TP, it nevertheless draws you in with a strong mythology, well-drawn characters and one of television's greatest anti-heroes in the person of the town's evil sheriff Lucas Buck (Played with charismatic charm by Gary Cole).

If you're looking for something new to check out, I'd highly recommend American Gothic since you've probably seen all the others on my list. It's on DVD and I think you can check out the episodes for free on fancast.com.

One last thing about my list. With the exception of Buffy The Vampire Slayer, all of these shows fell prey to early cancellation. Even Angel, while it was on for five years, was abruptly axed three-quarters of the way through Season Five. It could have gone on for two more seasons. tells you a lot about how hard it is for quality shows to stay on the air.

By the way, my favorite Trek is Deep Space Nine.

Alphabetic -

Arrested Development (oh Tobias, you blowhard)

Buffy: The Vampire Slayer ("They turned that stupid Kristy Swanson movie into a TV show?!"- Classmate, 2008)

Mystery Science Theater 3000 (it makes me happy just how many episodes I have never seen, waiting out there for me)

Twin Peaks (such a profound influence on my creative work, it's almost embarrassing)

The X-Files (jesus those last couple seasons were boring, but look at how much awesome came before. People who dismiss the mythos eps are glossing over the most emotionally wrenching character moments in the series)

Yup, bunch of genre stuff. I know The Wire and Sopranos, et all, will make me cum in my brain, but these are the shows that do it for me.

the problem is that trek is pretty fucking awful except for that 10% that's exquisite. ds9 at least has the common courtesy to go from "pretty decent" to "amazing," but frankly there's no trek series (or even single season) that's really all that great, just some awesome episodes here and there.

I have all three seasons of Arrested Development on DVD and got a warm fuzzy feeling when I found out that the whole cast is on board for a movie.  Heheheheheheeeee...giddy little school girl!

Michael Cera was the lone holdout for a while. But Pop-Pop set him straight.

This thread made me remember that while I've seen every episode from the first two seasons twice, I have not seen anything from the third season of Arrested Development.

5. American Gothic.

Such a groovy show. For anyone who has DirecTV, they replay it on Chiller every now and then. (Along with Twin Peaks, BTW)

My Top 5 shows in no particular order:

M*A*S*H
Northern Exposure
Twin Peaks
Dead Like Me
Star Trek - OK, for the sake of discussion and so j doesn't have a miniature stroke...I don't think one can actually be a Trek fan if they don't like ALL Trek series', so I rarely if ever choose a favorite. That being said, the best of the five is obviously DS9 for the most outstanding genius-to-crap episode ratio. However, if I were to select a favorite of the five series', my personal fave will always be TNG simply because it contains my favorite episode in all of Trek canon and holds the honor of containing the only Trek episode that almost make me cry.

Twin Peaks
Garth Marenghi's Darkplace
Carnivalé
I'm Alan Partridge
Serial Experiments: Lain

All five shows are amazing in their own right. TP you're all quite aware of, as are most of you with Carnivalé too. Alan Partridge needs no introduction to most. Garth Marenghi's Darkplace is a hysterically funny faux-horror/drama series done by the same people/actors behind and in The IT Crowd, Father Ted, The Office, etc. The timing, effects, acting, dialogue is all so badly put together (on purpose of course) and has caused some serious belly-aches from laughter. It is seriously one of the funniest things i have ever seen. The soundtrack is a blatant Badalamenti tribute too.

SE:L can be explained as a modern day Twin Peaks type story, but it is a Manga (don't let that put you off; that word tends to scare some people!). A girl is found dead within the first couple of scenes of the first episode. She is contacting certain people from "beyond the grave", but through the medium of technology, rather than dreams. Allsorts of fucked up stuff happens which is too deep and weird to explain right now. Needless to say it is a very captivating show, and i had to watch one immediately after the other when i got the DVD. I'm so glad i didn't have to wait a week to find out what happened next.

Well, five is just not enough, (especially when you've lived as many decades as I have!)  As soon as I posted my list, I thought of 5 more.  I can't leave off these:

Monty Python's Flying Circus

All in the Family

The Bob Newhart Show

Trek: TOS

Carnivale
