I liked Babel overall but still perfer 21 Grams of all of Inarritu's films...hehehe, yeah Brad did have the Syriana look in Babel...lol...I forgot to mention this on the Oscar thread, but I love Thelma Schoonmaker, she is such a sweet, classy lady and I liked her speech, I was really surprised, but pleased she won the editing award although I think the editing was better in Babel...Thelma is on a few commentaries, Raging Bull and The Aviator come to mind and her insights to her process and collaborations with Marty are always very interesting...Gonna watch Three Kings later (for the first time in widescreen, because I had it on VHS forever)later, which was a film I thought deserved a film nomination (over The Sixth Sense) at the time it was eligible for the Oscars...I am hoping The Prestige arrives today because I am looking forward to seeing it a second time...Jesse pointed something about Babel last night, the young Morrocan kid in Babel was pretty darn good and I said with the Pitt/Blanchett/Bernal headed cast it was Barraza and Kicuchi that stole the show in my opinion...they could have given the awards to either or both of these women for best supporting actress...

Just watched Three Kings -- commented on it breifly in that last post, definitely David O Russell's best film...now I am gonna watch the 2 disc edition of A Room With A View...woohoo!!...Also, I purchased some DVDs today on E-bay...After seeing the Morricone tribute last night, it reminded me of how incredible a movie The Mission is (and perhaps Ennio's best score)so I bought it, What's New Pussycat? and in honor of Martin Scorcese, The Age of Innocence (upping my Marty total to 15)...more on ARWAV later...have a groovy evening...

Repo Man - Fun and bizarre little movie. Another excellent performance by Harry Dean Stanton (I watched the great Paris, Texas last night). This movie was weird in a hundred different ways but somehow it held together, and didn't become too campy. Emilio Estevez was actually pretty good! A fun movie that I would definitely recommend... it seems to have been forgotten...

Yes, Silencio, Notes on a Scandal is quite good and I plan on purchasing the DVD once it is released...
Ride With The Devil - So, I finally watched Ang Lee's Bushwacker drama and I thought it was very good indeed...the way the relationship developed between Jake (Tobey Maguire) and Holt (Jeffery Wright) was wonderful, didn't find it too predictable and both actors were quite good, Skeet Ulrich and even Jewel (although she was kind of flat sometimes)did well. The battle sequences were done extraordinarily and Freddie Elmes camerawork (he's done 3 films with Ang) was great as always. James Schamus wrote a good script showing nice contrast from his previous screenplay for The Ice Storm. All in all, a nice addition to my collection...One thing though, Tom Wilkinson has a cameo in the beginning of Sense and Sensibility and a minor role in this film, I would like to see Ang use an actor of his caliber in a leading role, since his new film is already done (Ang that is) perhaps they work down the road.

Ang Lee's next occidental movie is called A little game. A picture-perfect couple fake a break-up, only to learn their friends never thought their union was a good idea in the first place. Shakespearian, huh?

The Elephant Man God bless you, TCM. I admit I missed the first five minutes or so, but I saw all the major plot points (I believe I tuned in at the scene where Treves goes over to take Merrick's mask off and see him for the first time), so I consider this another Lynch movie seen. You can feel the industrial oppression of EH pretty heavily over this follow-up (DL + Victorian London? Perfect!), and Merrick looks like he could be the bastard child of the lever-pulling man and the lady in the radiator. Also, the first and last time you'll see knighted actors in a Lynch film. Awakenings Now, I liked this movie, but how many times has Robin Williams played an eccentric doctor who pays attention to patients that are ignored by his peers? I counted at least three. Fortunately, this isn't nearly as saccharine as Patch Adams, or as depressing as What Dreams May Come.

And note that Elephant Man soundtracker John Morris also worked extensively for Mel Brooks, notably writing the songs for Blazing Saddles: the title song (Frankie Laine R.I.P.) , I'm Tired (Madeleine Kahn R.I.P. as well) & The French Mistake (aka Hold out Your Hands, Stick Out Your Tush).

Yeah I know... Neil Gaiman is one of my favorite writers, but apparently he can't write a decent movie script... after the visuals got old that movie bored the hell out of me... Last two movies were The Deer Hunter and Whale Rider I thought the Deer Hunter was excellent... messy and flawed but powerful and involving... the long running time flew by. Great performances, and very epic. Maybe a bit overrated, but still great watching. My only real problem was that though the story and the world the movie took place in were absorbing it took a long time to get a real connection with the characters... the Christopher Walken character was underdevolped. Whale Rider was excellent as well, though much smaller in scope. Great perfomance by Keisha Castle-Hughes (she really deserved the Oscar nom). Predictable but moving story; beautiful cinematography.

From the Nuart Archeological Dig of Netflix, yet another goodie that somehow eluded me the past 55 years -- Sudden Fear with Joan Crawford and Jack Palance. Noiry B&W, of course, it is the story of a wildly successful playright (Joan) who also happens to be a wildly wealthy heiress. She works because she wants to contribute; not because she has to. The film opens with the New York director and investor showcasing their choice for the male lead (Jack Palance) in Joan's upcoming Broadway play. It was all but a done deal that Jack has the part. While impressed with his acting skills, Joan doesn't think he's "romantic" enough and fires him on the spot. You might guess that she will come to change her mind. What follows is a cross country train trip, an accidental encounter and a well-thought out mix of suspense, betrayal, revenge, murder plots and cross-plots all set in San Francisco. Very satisfying! On a one to five, I give it 4 stars. * * * * Susan

For Your Consideration - Lesser Guest, but still very funny. Fred Willard with a faux-hawk was worth the rental. Tideland - Gilliam's latest, a fascinating take on a dark, contemporary fairy tale, pretty f-d up in places, and quite beautiful overall. I Got the Hookup - This film is on par with Freddy got Fingered as one of the most WTF? miscalculations in the history of comedies. Makes you say Nnnng for 90 straight minutes.
Johnny Mnemonic - Perhaps the most horribly awful SF film ever made. Really, just awful.

started watching What's New Pussycat? last night kind of late, because I was on the phone with someone for quite a while and we were discussing Pink Floyd synchs with movies and I gave Obscurred By Clouds along with A Clockwork Orange a whirl. It wasn't bad, it was cool how some of the lyrics matched up...two others I am looking forward to are Animals along with Casablanca and The Good, The Bad and The Ugly...anyway, Pussycat is one of my favorite comedies, Peter Sellers is simply a riot in it and Peter O' Toole's comic timing is immaculate, a delightful farce about the sexual freedom of the sixties.

Lately I have rewatched three out of four of The Beatles films. The best one (Help!) still before me but here's what I thought of the other three after years: A Hard Day's Night - not very ambitious ;-) but for what it is, it is totally satisfying. Really funny, beautifully autoironic and with a lot of freshness and young energy. Just like the music! And Paul's grandpa is an absolute hit there! Yellow Submarine - I don't know... once again I can't say this film hits the nail. It has its moments but I'm afraid it is more supposed to be good, than really is. The many moments the Beatles quote themselves don't feel genuine somehow... they are witty, alright, but it's more like, let's put in a quote from Getting better here, than really making sense. And the music - well, too many songs which are no more than average. Magical Mystery Tour - hehehehe that one I always found highly hilarious. It's one load of rubbish of course but wasn't that exactly the goal? It doesn't make any sense AT ALL, but the absurd humour is quite alright with me. And here the music is FABULOUS, only except for my number-last song of The Beatles, that is Blue Jay Way... I truly hate it.

Wow... the Beatles songs you like must be different from the ones I like... Blue Jay Way is by far my favorite song in Magical Mystery Tour... saw Red Dragon last night. Good adaptation of the book with terriffic performances. Very enjoyable aside from the terribly misguided ending.

Little Miss Sunshine - I really liked it...good performances and I couldn't help but question why Alan Arkin won the OScar over Djimon Hounsou, but other than that...great script and the ending really threw me for a loop. I didn't know what to expect when Olive took the stage that part was hilarious. I do recommend you see it if you haven't and no it's not better than either of the "Children" movies, but a great little film.

Yeah, I'm really not crazy about that one either. Which is tough for me to say, 'cause George is my favorite Beatle. As far as Mystery Tour goes, it doesn't get any better than "I Am The Walrus", of course. It made an immortal catchphrase of a nonsense word. I've only seen Hard Day's Night so far. Mystery Tour is really hard to track down, and I decided to not even bother with Help!. I'm sure I'll get to Yellow Submarine eventually.

Last one we watched was The Illusionist. it was...alright. Nothing special, it was fairly obvious what was going on, and didn't think the CGI was up to much either as it was blatantly obvious it was CGI. Just did nothing for me, I'm afraid. To sum up, left me feeling a bit MEH.

Okay, I'll hold my hand up and admit I actually paid money to see Ghostrider.
In short, this is the worst movie I've seen in a long, long time. The dialogue, script and acting were all abysmal. Frighteningly bad performances, even from Nic Cage. Surely not the same guy that was in Wild at Heart? Eva Mendes' gravity defying boobs and the CGI were the only things that mildly sparked my interest. A total and utter turdfest, folks.
