Before The Devil Knows You're Dead - a cool little film, masterfully directed by Mr Lumet and how can one not totally dig Albert Finney...Phil Hoffman and Ethan Hawke were superb...this is a very well put together film, the writing, editing and all that...highly recoommended by me (and Susan)

I am Legend

Ok I knew nothing about this movie before I watched it, and that is often a big advantage for a movie because I have no expectations.  I was very pleasantly surprised.  I didn't expect a movie like this, and didn't expect it to be this good.  Very entertaining!!     8.5/10

About Children of Men, Booth. Did you check out the featurette about how they filmed some of it, especially the 360 filming of that one sequence from inside the car, that was really fascinating how they manufacturd that device in order to get the effect they were looking for.

They created a brand new rig that had never been used before for this sequence. Children of Men featured some of the most breath taking cinematography in years, and yet, Pan's Labyrinth (yawn) goes home with the oscar gold. Sorry, but that still pisses me off.

Saw Sweeny Todd last weekend and I thought it was excellent really beautifully dark, bloody stuff. I actually enjoyed the musical aspects of it and though Burton handled the staging well. It's actually the first Burton film I've enjoyed in about a decade.

Good work, Tim! Here's hoping he stays away from Planet of the Apes 2: Electric Boogaloo.

GPS, a very well made locally made film. The trailer before it was for River's Edge. The next night I saw Crispin Glover's very unique film :It's Fine! Everything is Fine!, with C.G. doing a lengthy Q& A & his one hour reading/slideshow thing beforehand. Quite the evening. Saw There Will Be Blood today.  Also, on DVD, The Chumscrubber & Swamper (starring my friend Jacqui Olivas).

Looks like I'm the only one viewing films these days!  Just saw Teeth, a black comedy about a teenage girl with an actual vagina dentata mutation. The actress looks like a young Heather Graham & her stepdad is played by Lenny von Dohlen.  I give it 2 incisors up!!

I was wondering where this thread went.

Juno
It is kind of adorable. The dialogue is not exactly naturalistic, and the indie soundtrack can be cloying, but I don't regret seeing it. Definitely the Little Miss Sunshine of 2007, an out-of-left-fielder that critics cuddle and the Academy takes notice of.
I heart CJ Craig.

Gone Baby Gone
Casey and his brother (heh) explore the skeezy dregs and unexpected beauties of South Boston. Who woulda guessed a couple years ago that of the Afflecks, Ben would prove a capable director, with Casey emerging as the more notable actor?

Art School Confidential

Why didn't anyone like this? Sure, it's not as good as Ghost World, but it isn't bad, just a little flat.

Helvetica

One of the most engrossing documentaries I've ever seen. Well worth a watch.

Death to Smoochy

Comic Sans credits?!

Atonement

Having never read the book I didn't know what to expect I only know I was disapointed with the second help of the film. Especially the ending. I thought it ended abruptly without a truly satisfactory ending. We never got a grasp on any of the characters, who they were and what their motivations were.

This flaws aside, the cinematography was gorgeous and the performances are what make the film. It's a crime that James McAvoy isn't nominate for best actor at this years oscars. But all around, the performers give this picture the legs it needs to stand on.

Moderately good stuff, not quite sure if the picture deserves the oscars rather than the actors who bring the movie to life and almost make you forget how dodgy the second portion of this film is.

Still need to see There Will Be Blood before I cast my vote.

Interesting, I thought that Atonement gained strength in the second half, as it moves away from the incredibly difficult to adapt first portion of the book... the later parts seem to be more dramatic and moving, particularly the intense climactic scene where Briony confronts Cecilia and Robby, which may be even better than it is in the book.

Sideways

Very good because of its dramatic capabilities with lots of humour interspersed but I feel like I was mislead by thinking it was an out-and-out comedy.

Brazil

The second Gilliam film I've seen. Lots of references to 1984, kind of spoilt when I found out Gilliam hadn't read Orwell's book but still very good and funny. Perhaps not as great as Twelve Monkeys though.

I've never read the book so I was watching with no prior knowledge of the story or how it developed in any other medium. The scene of the confrontation at the end was well done, brilliantly acted and powerful, but it was deflated by the scene that directly followed it. I just felt the structure fell apart and as an audience we were left with nothing. The end hollowed out the rest of the film and I left the theater feeling like I had just looked at a blank slate. Perhaps it should have been longer? Should have explored the characters a bit more?

I am a fan of film. I love it when people find interesting and new ways to surprise us with the medium and story telling in general. Honestly, it was really the ending that shot me down. It was the sudden cut off from the story and the "Here's how it REALLY went down" ending. It felt out of place,  and ruined the pacing.

I went into Atonement expecting to like it but I was let down. I am happy so many people do enjoy this film. I think a movie should be able to stand on it's own outside of the book. And if you're saying this movie improves upon the book, that's one story I'm not going to read.

That's interesting, I loved the very ending. I feel like it's the final confirmation of Briony's character, and her inability to completely change. Even more than 60 years later she was unable to face what she had done... I can see how it could seem anticlimactic, but that's somewhat intentional. I thought they handled it really well though and Vanessa Redgrave did a great job. That's the moment when you can finally get a good handle on the character in the movie (she's much more developed in the book). I'm not saying the film is without flaws (There Will Be Blood and Sweeney Todd were much better), but I liked it quite a bit. I wonder if the second half would seem weaker to me if I hadn't read the book though....

Cloverfield: very well made monster flick. I picked out Chris Mulkey as a soldier almost immediately! Hey, Chris!

The Secret of NIMH

Can great animation save a poor movie? Guess not.
It is delightfully dark though.

Thanks for the warning, Chris.  One more reason not to see Cloverfield.

No "dishing" here. I'm a Cloverfield AND Mulkey fan (besides, he's only in a short bit of it).  There was one year at the Fest when C.M. couldn't make it & it did inconvenience the organizers (Susan) a bit. THAT could be what she's referencing...

Just watched Heat. Really very good movie even though I'm not usually into these kind of thrillers.

I head about Teeth.  Sounds good, OSF.

I just saw Across The Universe, against my better judgment.  I hate it when people ruin Beatles songs.

Weak-ass plot. A couple of neat special effects, but not neat enough to save it.

The Brave One - A Neil Jordan film, starring Jodie Foster and Terrence Howard. I really enjoyed this film and would recomend it. It's the best thing Foster has done in a while and Howard does a nice job as well. And no Stephen Rea, wasn't sure it was a Neil Jordan film for a while. Basically, Jodie's charcater is scarred by the brutal death of her fiance in a mugging and goes a little nuts. Terence Howard is a detective that befriends her.

The Caine Mutiny - classic film I watched the night I called off work, so I had to do a lot of rewinding, because I kept dozing off, but I hadn't watched this in a long time and have been taking more advantage of the films available On Demand. This one was free. A little cheesy in the beginning with the introduction of the new Ensign, but when they hit the high seas and Bogart takes over the ship is when the film really starts getting good. This was a freebie

The Deer Hunter - Another freebie. Goodness, I forgot how long that freakin' wedding sequence was, it's like the first third of the film. Yes, this is a classic film with great performances by DeNiro, Walker and Savage (yes, I went, Hey, that's Henry Scudder!! because I forgot he was in this). Then when they get to Vietnam, it is not set up very well. All of the sudden they're captured, but they do a good job setting up the Russian Roulette film theme that pervades throughout the film. A good film nevertheless with a very good ending.

Michael Clayton - watched it a second time. I have a review for this one on this thread somewhere.
