The Life Aquatic I just didn't get.  A mild chuckle here and there, but otherwise...

Anyway, the last I saw was Thank You For Not Smoking.  It was suprising and entertaining.  Funny in many places, and cutting in it's commentary on the tobacco industry.  I never thought I'd see the day where I was cheering on the representative of a tobacoo organisation!  I bet you do too when you watch it!!

Tideland - yeah, I want to see that and the reviews are pretty bad so far, but the way I look at it, it can't be worse than The Brothers Grimm. I enjoy Gilliam's work enough to wear I'll go see Tideland

Guns of Navarone - great flick with a great cast, Susan. Too bad about your prejudices against River Kwai, since that's my favorite WWII film, even though it's not really a war film...same thing with The Great Escape...

recently bought the third and final season of Millennium so I have started by re-watching the first (and fantastic) season and working my way forward.

Hide and Seek

Robert de Niro will now be referred to as Robert Dinero, since he's only in the game for the paycheck.
This is a stupid horror (redundant?) movie with a Scooby Doo twist ending. Robert Dinero is the imaginary friend.

Really, Smokey? You think Bridge Over the River Kwai deserves a second chance a half century later, huh?  Well, I can see you feel pretty strongly about it.

Maybe I'll try.  I was just a kid but I remember being unable to make sense of it, the film going on seemingly endlessly and that SONG with the whistling!!  See there was this kid named Spencer in my 5th grade class room and he was a whistler.  I'd take any ten fingernails on the chalkboard over Spencer's whistling!

You generally* have fine taste though, so maybe I'll take a chance and put it on my queue right after Guns of Navarone.

QUOTE:Slither is freakin' awesome! Sooo gross and slimy. They actually depleted the national supply of fake skin making their creatures! (Yes, I watched all the special features.)

And it has Nathon Fillion in it who totally rules.

Troy

A pretty horrible interpretation of the Iliad, that gets most of the facts almost entirely wrong But as rule, I tend to do my best not trying to compare one thing to another. As a standard film, I have to admit its a guilty pleasure. Mainly just for Brian Cox's totally over the top yet still cool performance of Agamemnon, and Sean Beans class performance as Odysseus.

Dr. Strangelove

A new review of such a popular and acclaimed film can only be interesting if it takes the negative position. But alas, I love it too.

All Quiet On The Western Front

An anti-war film... in 1930, man!
Yeah, so the German soldiers speak with American accents and some of the acting is a tad over-the-top by today's standards, but the camera work is sophisticated and the script is solid.

I finally saw Tristram Shandy : A Cock and Bull Story the other night, and I was certainly not disappointed.  I read the novel when I was in grad school and thought it was brilliant, and the film just takes the joke to a whole new level.  I loved the whole actors playing themselves as actors as roles in a film.  It is complete fourth wall broken down vertigo.

Funny.... I'm watching season one of X-files... I love that show. I want to watch Millenium sometime, but I want to go through all of X-files first... so it'll be quite a while.

That god damn trailer's more popular than Uncle's Day in a whorehouse!

Silent Hill at Eddie and Millicent's house. This is the 5 th time I've watched it all the way through and it's still one of the most beautiful movies I've ever seen, and by far the best Video game movie I've seen all year :)

QUOTE:I saw Tideland today, and it freaked me out a touch, but I liked it a lot. I advise it only for the adventurous viewer, and the reviews will back me up on that -- I read a dozen when I got home, and they were collectively noteworthy for the frequency of the words "pointless", "indefensible", and "unwatchable". I agree with none of the three, but it's definitely a challenging film. I thought it was a sweet, dark meditation on the value of imagination in survival terms, and I found it to be respectful of both the intelligence and the boundaries of its audience. If persistently-disturbed fairy-tale sounds good to you, you should probably go to see it, especially if you enjoy feeling squirmy in public.

Yeah, I saw this one a few months ago, and made a post somewhere in here about it.

I did like the film, in a weird "OMG I CAN'T F*CKING WATCH THIS MOVIE" type of way

I thought it was a beautiful movie.
But... and I mean this from the bottom of my heart... someone should be arrested for this movie being made.
Beauty and all that other stuff aside, someone must be punished. In the worst possible way.

I also forsee that girl growing up to be the #1 most traumatized child actor in history.

(And now I shall once again disappear in a puff of smoke, never to be seen again... for 3 months)

I can relate entirely to your feelings about Tideland.  In my case, my appreciation for what I liked about the film was strong enough to outweigh my icky feelings, which were definitely also present.

Tomorrow night I'm going to watch Slither and The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, and once again cues for drinking will be involved.  I doubt I will be writing about it when I get home, as I may well be embarrassingly drunk.  Or maybe that's a good reason to write, I'm not sure...

I saw Following last night. It was really late and I was pretty tired so I didn't really figure it out, but I understood it fine. It was pretty good, but with the hindsight of Memento is just seemed like practice for that masterpiece. Interesting and clever, though it can't match to Nolan's later work (aside from Batman Begins)... worth a look for Nolan fans.

Haven't seen Tideland yet but Jodelle Ferland was impressive in Silent Hill (which I think was unfairly criticized) and seems to be a promising child actress. Hopefully she won't be so traumatized she stops acting

Fun With Dick and Jane

Not too much.

Wordplay

Interesting documentary if you can get by the New York Times self promotion.  These people take their crossword puzzles seriously.

My past two days of movie watching:

Marie Antoinette (pretty, but not much substance)

This Film Is Not Yet Rated - worth watching

Drop Dead Sexy- Crispin Glover and Jason Lee in a terrible film

Strangers With Candy- didn't even make me crack a smile, and I loved the show :(

Dead Man's Shoes.  I really like Paddy Considine.  He was very good in My Summer of Love.

Having a hard time leaving the 40s and early 50s these days and last night was no exception.  We watched 1942's Random Harvest with Ronald Colman and Greer Garson.  A kind of amnesia upon amnesia suffered by a WWI veteran.  Better than Netflix described it.

But, as I've been finding, the extras were a special treat.  One was a 1942 Marine recruiting film and the other was called "Don't Talk" which was a serial film intended to teach Americans to think before they speak at a time of war and demonstrated one possiblity of Loose Lips.  Really good!

Quite enjoyed  Casino Royale & For Your Consideration, but the best film I saw last week was Little Children, the sophomore effort by Todd Field. I thought In The Bedroom a promising debut, but this one floored me. Skip the blockbusters & go see this surprising, challenging little picture (starring Kate Winslett, Jennifer Connelly, Hard Candy's Patrick Wilson & the return of Jackie Earle Haley).
