Hot Fuzz

I laughed pretty consistently throughout. The Shaun-style jump cuts and inserts are amped up, and the action sequences near the end get a little hard to follow, but that's kind of the point.

I was rather relieved that they went the nonlethal route. I remember thinking it would have been mighty jarring if Nick had started mowing down everyone's friends and neighbo(u)rs. Even Timothy Dalton survives his... incident.

I couldn't make the transition into Act 3. When Shaun went from wacky to serious, the transition made sense because the problem was getting worse. With Hot Fuzz, it seems like it went serious because the main character saw a DVD rack.

The last movie I saw was the Simpsons. My opinion on it is pretty neutral. If you like the (moderately funny) modern Simpsons enough to pay a (moderately expensive) matinee price you will recieve (moderate) entertainment. Whoopdee shit.

Jamie wrote: I agree that the actual scenes of violence are very affecting, but honestly, after the lake scene, most of the film is more of a collection of character studies and tense discussions than a gross-out.

But it was not that I was grossed out, Jamie, but rather that I was seriously spooked. I told my husband tonight that if we are ever in that situation, let's both go for the gun. I also promised I wouldn't tie him up and expect the same consideration on his end.

Rob and I talked about that, too.  He said the guy's approach was too obvious, he announced himself too soon. At the point I said 'he has a gun,' we would've ran down that hill behind.  In the movies, the killer's always an expert marksman, but that would be a really hard shot- his footing was unsteady on the slope, and there was tree cover nearby.

Or if Rob was armed (which would likely be the case) he'd immediately push me down the hill to safety, say "run" and just light the bastard up.

What was freaky about that scene was that it was based on the survivor's account (yeesh!)

I thought Fuzz had a wacky/serious balance throughout. It didn't feel like a big ol' emotional shift at all to me. In fact, your statement about the worsening situation applies just as well to Fuzz.

O Lucky Man!

I'm not sure how I felt about this movie. It was a fifty-fifty balance of things I liked and things I didn't like, though I'm leaning towards like.

I disagree, mostly because there was no help availible in Shaun. In Hot Fuzz, Nick spontaneously decides it'd be more fun to blow the town away than get a little assistance.

Also, as long as we're tangentially referencing Bill Nighy, I really want him to play the 11th Doctor.

The Bourne Ultimatum

One of the things I like about this series is that they resist the temptation to inject humor via snarky asides or winks to the camera. Say what you want about Matt Damon, he plays this role completely straight.
That said, I thought those constant visual callbacks to the first film were just a little too precious. Oh look, Julia Stiles is washing dye out of her hair and cutting it with scissors like that German chick did!

Aside- Moby unveils a newly recorded version of "Extreme Ways" for the end credits. I'm not too sure about this nu-disco kick he's on right now.

I almost went to see The Bourne U;timatum, but haven't seen Supremacy and even though I've read the books, I still want to see the films in order...

Talk To Her - For an Almodovar film is a little more subdued than most, perhaps that's because two of the characters are in comas. There is a twisted plot twist that is an Almodovar trademark, but even this is handled delicately. The two main actors do a fine job and although it is far from action packed like say Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, it is still a beautifully written and directed film, Should see it if you haven't.

I hadn't seen Supremacy since it was in the theater, and though I wish I had refreshed on it, it didn't effect my enjoyment of this one too much. Though I didn't realize until I read it online afterwards, the midway point of Ultimatum is also the very end of Supremacy. I'm going to have to watch that one again now.

So, it is kind of like Lord of the Rings where the beginning of The Two Towers is the tail end of Fellowship. Someone at work is gonna bring in Supremacy for me to borrow this evening so I'll watch it this weekend sometime.

Factory Girl

I hate to admit it, but Guy Pearce's Andy Warhol is superior to Crispin Glover's.  Someone has got to win an award for this movie.  Everyone looked and acted spot-on.  Beth Grant looks exactly like Mama Warhola. Even Hayden Christensen's Bob Dylan was authentic- and pretty sexy, too.

I'm not even going to react to Hayden Christensen (whoever that is) pretending to be Bob Dylan. Will not even blink an outraged eyelash over that. Hmpf. There is only one Bob Dylan, Angel; there cannot be an authentic fake Dylan.

Okay. Now that I'm finished not reacting...

I finished Zodiac and liked it very much even if Jake G. playing an idiot savant was rough. Probably he modeled his perf after the real life character. Can't fault him for that. Chloe Sevigny in a Wifey role?! Wow. It's come to that already, huh? If Anne Archer were younger, she'd have had that role wrapped up. But I really did think it was an enjoyable flick. When it was over, I could scarcely wait to watch the extras. But there were none. Only a preview for the Director's Cut DVD "coming in 2008" with interviews, crime scene photos, and running commentary from Fincher, etal. Grrrrrrrr.

Have watched the first disc of the Martin Scozzese (original Italian name) documentary called My Voyage to Italy. It's not what I had expected but it is fantastic!!!! Maybe the second disc will be what I expected which was an actual trip to Italy to seek out the locations of films he had admired and family homelands. What the first disc has done is inspired me to want to watch a slew of early Italian films though. I'd been wanting to see this film for years but was never able to locate it in video stores. Thank you Netflix. Highly recommended to any cinephile or anyone who wants to understand the genesis of a young Martin Scorsese and his love for film.

Susan

PS Thought I'd Google that Dylan impersonator to see what he looks like and found this from last year. Looks like Dylan didn't like the non-impersonation either.

PPS  Here's how he's credited in Factory Girl on IMDB:

Then I guess you'll probably be skipping this film.

Maybe not, Logic.  This one is about the essence of Dylan; not a standard bio-pick like Ray or Walk the Line.  It might work.  I especially like the notion of Cate "Zimmerman" Blanchett.  Could be interesting.

Admittedly, I'm not a big Dylan fan (but am a great admirer of his style and legacy) so I'm not the best judge.  Though I knew exactly who Haydn was supposed to be the second he came on the screen, having no prior knowledge of the romance with Sedgewick.

Come to think of it- Haydn in FG looks a lot like Jakob Dylan, who got the best of Bob's looks, imo.

Jakob is beautiful too. Granted. Same blue blue eyes. Same jaw structure. But he's just not Bob Dylan Had the world never known Jakob, the face of music, art, poetry, film and culture problaby wouldn't have been drastically altered. Had there not been a Bob Dylan, it's impossible to imagine how great the void in 20th century art and artists.

Check out this YouTube video interview of Dylan mid-60s. This may give you a better image than the ravaged Dylan of late. One thing he's not is Hayden Christiansen. Whoever that is. Star Wars. Wrong tribe too. This is the Dylan I grew up with.

Behind the Mask

I thought it was a little silly when the film started by proclaiming itself as existing in the same universe as Freddy, Jason, and Michael Myers. But it got better when it began its own take on the genre. The documentary stuff works very well, the filmic stuff... eh, not so much. It's no Shaun of the Dead (few things are), but it's reliably entertaining as a comedy.

And the end credits song is perfect.

Got to see this on an inflatable screen, outdoors on the lawn of my Uni. Free popcorn, too! Too bad the feature itself was so underwhelming.
Though I know it's based on a Frank Miller graphic novel from '98, the film seems to borrow heavily from 2000's Gladiator, another widely acclaimed film that I didn't care for. Except for the major difference that the wife and son survive while the main character dies.
