If a movie makes me wish death upon the characters, I don't usually consider it very good. If a movie makes me wish that the villain would just kill the protagonists (annoying Tarantino proxies), then something is definitely wrong.

Synecdoche was a stunning experience. I'm going to have to see it once or twice more before deciding whether it's overwrought or just-right, but I'm presently leaning toward the latter view. It was also far funnier than I had expected (the first half, at least).

The Reflecting Skin 2 Tideland
It's a step up from The Brothers Grimm I guess, but still well below what I'd call a good movie.

I hadn't checked the dates or done the math. Basically I just wanted to say 'hello' though.

Are you saying you don't like The Reflecting Skin, or just that it's as much a travesty as a typical shoestring budget sequel trying to cash in on the name of a good movie? I thought Tideland was terrible. I'd go as far as to add it to the Worst Movies Ever Seen thread.

| No, it's just a cheap shot based on a couple of things I noticed that made me think of that movie: House surrounded by flaxen fields Unstable kid "She's a vampire" And they share the let's film in Canada and pretend it's the US aspect.

The King I picked up this quirky independent film because it has William Hurt in a supporting role. Gael Garcia Bernal plays a young sailor just a civilian, showing up in a town to announce himself as the bastard son of born again preacher William Hurt. Things go from bad to worse. Laura Harring plays Hurt's wife, and it is truly amazing that the gorgeous brunette from Mulholland Drive can pull off the plain, pale, conservative wife of a bible-thumper. She isn't given much to do in The King but is utterly convincing.

Shows how close I was watching. I just couldn't bear to. The girl... so annoying.
I recently watched The Fall, and damned if that little girl wasn't annoying, too! (Sadly, j, I think my love for Booth is unrequited, otherwise he'd come to the TP Fest)

Quarantine, very effective horror flick (remake of Spanish hit Rec), starring Dexter's Jennifer Carpenter. W., about a certain U.S. president. Still think he's the worst we've ever had, but now understand him better (kinda like Stone's Nixon). Josh Brolin is uncanny (don't misunderestimate him!)...

These are my universally acclaimed recent flicks watched in the spirit of Halloween horror goodness Black Christmas (remake) - Atrociously bad. I figured since it had hotties Michelle Trachtenberg (Buffy's little sister Dawn) and Lacy Chabert (little girl from Party of Five and Mean Girls) it would be watchable. It was boring, every girl actually looked similar and had no personality. The only thing they were able to do was the say the F word every other word because I think teenagers think that is really cool. I want my hour and a half back! Halloween (another remake LOL) - Surprisingly entertaining. I had already seen Rob Zombie's House of a 1000 Corpses and Devil's Rejects, so I knew what to expect (graphic horror and subhuman brutality). He is IMO a very talented director that I wonder what he could do with a slightly more serious work. Great first hour flashback to when Michael Myers was a kid with awesome 70s soundtrack and uber hot stripper mom played by Zombie's wife. She has a rear that is to die for. Even cameo by Lynch regular Brad Dourif. Other cameos from older horror movies including Dee Wallace Stone and one of the hot teenage chicks was a little girl in of the 80s Halloween flicks. Not scary per se, but a good look into the mind of a psychopath and excellent directorial work as usual from Zombie. If you like slashers, you will like this one.

Quantum of Solace: Daniel Craig starts where he left off in Casino Royale, and was excellent in QOS. Daniel is turning James Bond into a real badass. Action-packed from start to finish. Loved the film, and I look forward to Daniel's next 007 film if this and Casino Royale are any indication.

Just saw Oliver Stone's W. I liked it a lot. It was a pretty even-handed 'what went wrong' analysis of GW's goals in office, and his relationships with George Sr. (James Cromwell) and Barbara (Ellen Burstyn,) If you hate Dubya, you still will. If you're behind him, you still will be. This is a good summary of the political maneuverings behind Desert Storm and the Iraq War.
Casting was PERFECT. Josh Brolin, Diane Lane's husband, was masterful at capturing President "just don't call me Junior" Bush's facial expressions and body language, his sexy party animal youth and the development of his political ego/spirituality as an aspect of identity. Thandie Newton's Condoleeza Rice and Elizabeth Banks' Laura Bush were incredible. The dynamic between Jeffery Wright (Colin Powell) and Richard Dreyfuss (Dick Cheney) was especially compelling. Great job on this one, very understated. Check it out.

Denver Film Fest time is here. So far I've seen: Brothers Bloom was the red carpet opener (by the director of Brick. He's a native Denver-ite, and very nice.) Well written AND acted. 5 stars. Donkey Punch (cute little thriller), Everything is Fine, (slow French indie drama). Eden Log, Two Lovers (liked this one a lot!), Not Quite Hollywood,(Ozploitation documntary) and Playing Columbine. Tomorrow's red carpet is Slumdog Millionaire. Closing night will be Last Chance Harvey. There's a total of 150 movies playing at 8 venues around the city over the course of 11 days. This press pass action is pretty sweet.
I've npw seen Surveillance 17x on my screener copy, and I'm about to see it 2x more (that will make it 3x on the big screen.) Can't wait to talk to Bill Pullman in person!

Recent rental: "Bernard and Doris" (2007). Susan Sarandon as Doris Duke, the wealthy spunky philanthropist, and Ralph Feines as her butler. Sarandon was pretty good, and Feinnes was amazing- he really disappeared into the character. Slow pace, sad, and wonderful development of the relationship betwee the two. I don't always have the patience for this style of movie but I really enjoyed this one.

Watched "Homicidal" which was a lot of fun. So then I thought it was time to check out "House on Haunted Hill." I looked at the opening scene and said, "Hey, that's the Ennis House in Hollywood." You may recognize it as the house in "Imitation of Love." After that, I slowly lost interest. The interiors were largely studio shots though there were some actual FLWright interiors. Susan

Thanks for the mention of this one...just put it on hold at my local library's website. I enjoy both these actors, and am interested to see Bob Balaban's directing. Recently saw "In Bruges" with Ralph Fienes, Colin Farrell, and Bernard Gleeson. Very enjoyable, quirky tale of two hit men ordered to cool off in the medieval city of Bruges after a botched job. Great characters, unusual resolutions.

What a great movie we happened upon the other night. Delirious. Steve Buscemi, love him. Michael Pitt, loved him in Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Okay, let's watch it, even though we missed the first 5 or so minutes. Wasn't paying real close attention though but listening. Listening is a good way to guage acting, I find. Almost always it's horrible but I was drawn into it. Then I started feeling it was similar to a Tom De Cillo movie. Well, that' s because it was! Then I paid close attention until the end and did an On Demand watch again the next day. And I still loved it. How did I miss hearing anything about this film when it was out? I really really like Tom. Then we rented The Queen. I thought The Queen would follow the entire course of Elizabeth II's reign but instead it's really how she reacted to Diana's death. Yawn. Great acting though, but the Brits generally are great actors, aren't they? Queen Mother too heavy; Chuck should have had a prosthetic nose; Helen Mirren was perfect as always. Loved the Queen's three black labs. That may have been my favorite part but the Corgis were cute too especially when the Queen told them to wait before eating. Maybe you have to live in a monarchy (or Canada...) to really appreciate this one. Susan
