Lost Boys: The Tribe

Here's what Kiefer had to say about it:

"If they had [asked] I wouldn't have done it," Kiefer Sutherland said in an interview in Beverly Hills, Calif...

The
24 star added that original Lost Boys helmer Joel Schumacher wasn't contacted by the sequel's producers either, and he didn't seem too happy about it.

"It's not a question of going back to that," Kiefer said. "That's a huge part of my life, [and] I really value that. To kind of not consider any of the others, Joel Schumacher and I ... You want to go make that, go make that. That's your right to do it. But if you're not going to talk to us about it ... To do a cameo in that ... would be really disrespectful to something that I thought we made at one time that I thought was special."

Kiefer retains warm feelings about
Lost Boys, which he doesn't consider a horror movie, unlike Mirrors. "Lost Boys was a conglomeration of a lot of things," he said. "It was funny. It was rock 'n' roll. It was cool-looking. It was scary at moments; it was touching at moments between, you know, Star and Michael." He chuckled. "God, I haven't said those two names for a long time."

And that's why Kiefer's the man.

That was totally crude (read: awesome.)

Yeah, Kiefer is way too much of a pro to be involved with that direct to video drivel.

Thanks. You just have to let it flow, it won't be fun if you fourchette.

Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay

I'm glad that I didn't like this.  I was concerned that I found White Castle so amusing.

The Host

Not nearly enough monster. The chase at the beginning was pretty exciting, but talk about blowing your load early.

Fido

The idea has potential, but the movie itself is just a trifle.

The Notorious Bettie Page

This is one of those nonstick movies where nothing lasts in your memory after it's over. Unfortunately.

Epic Movie

These Reader's Digest type movies are good when you don't have the time to watch epic movies such as The Narnia movie, The Willy Wonka movie, or Borat. It's nice.
And it has a black midget.

Burn After Reading

Amusing and Coen-y in the extreme. The lack of a central lynchpin character makes it a little difficult to care, though it's still a thrill to see talented actors chewing the scenery. Pitt steals the show, and is part of a plot-turning Blue Velvet reference. Make no bones about it, this is a B picture with an A cast.

1984

I've never read the book (and I'm not particularly inspired to check it out), so I can't judge this as an adaption. To me, the scenes were appropriately horrifying, the symbolism was a little repetitive, and the acting from John Hurt and Richard Burton (in his final role) was visceral. 20 years later, Hurt would become the thing he rallied against in this film.

Get Smart

A steady amount of medium-sized laughs and rote action. Steve Carell shows his patented brand of silly straight man, Anne Hathaway is gorgeous, the cameos pop up all over the place (look hard at the guy in the tree). Some cultural references (Chuck Norris? Really?) will date the film in a couple years. It's often very apparent that this was shot on video.

In the lead up to the release of Quantum of Solace...I'm rewatching Bond films every few days...yesterday it was the excellent License to Kill, Tim Dalton was very underrated, and Robert Davi is a magnificent Bond villain!

Fishtales (Billy Zane and Kelly Brook's children's movie)

Yes, I watched the whole thing.  Don't know if kids would like it, but it's pretty low-budget and corny.  I had to see it because I heard that critics were laughing out lound at how terrible it was at film festival screenings and walking out.  Kelly Brook has really big boobs...

Don't Come Knocking

I knew nothing about this movie, but it was 3 bucks at the pawnshop. Directed by Wim Wenders, screenplay by and starring Sam Shephard, co-starring his wife Jessica Lange...what could be bad?  Oh, yeah, and all the music by T-Bone Burnett.  Kind of a road movie/western with Shephard as a washed-up western actor bottoming out, riding off the set of a movie on horseback in search of redemption. Gorgeous to look at, lots of Edward Hopper-esque shots in Butte, Montana.  Great characters. Tim Roth is so funny as an insurance bounty hunter with the task of bringing Shephard back to the movie.  A nice addition to the collection, and such a deal!

Death Proof

If a movie makes me wish death upon the characters, I don't usually consider it very good. If a movie makes me wish that the villain would just kill the protagonists (annoying Tarantino proxies), then something is definitely wrong.

Terrible.

ditto that on Death Proof, Booth.

Chapter 27 and Deception

...skip 'em both!

idk, maybe Jared Leto was amusing as the nutjob Christian/Salinger/Beatles fan Mark David Chapman for 15 minutes, but pretty much a waste of time.

Oh, and the 50 pounds or whatever he gained for the part just made him look more innocent with his big baby eyes.  Nice try! (Aw, we still love ya, Jordan Catalano)

Antonio Gaudí

Finished my Gaudí week (see here) with this documentary. Criterion Collection and Taschen?! - pardonnez moi if I type this with my pinkies raised.

The soundtrack doesn't fit, and the photography is for the most time nothing you can't find in the book (which was superior).

Disappointing.

Oh no, I'm being haunted by exposition!
On the other hand, the short bit between Cusack exiting the elevator on the 14th floor and entering his room was creepier than the entirety of the other King hotel movie*.

*not the tv version.

Zodiac

This didn't do much for me. It's predictable in the same way Titanic was but with a sure it's unsolved wink wink ending.

Explosion!
Oh, that looks expensive.
That must have been embarrassing to say.

Boring and stupid. And some kind of robot Jar-jar running around.

Eraserhead

Thursday night marked a lot of firsts: the first time I'd seen a Lynch film on the big screen (though it was a digital projection from the DVD, and not a print as I was lead to believe). The first time I'd watched Lynch with an audience (a lot of slightly awkward laughs sprinkled throughout). And the first time I'd been able to discuss Lynch with friends outside of the Internet.
Reactions from Lynch virgins:

P- F*cking brilliant. I'm never having sex without a condom ever again.
J- Trippy as shit. I wanna see it again.
D- WHAT THE F*CK WAS THAT PIECE OF SHIT? I'm glad I saw it once, but never again.

I have to agree that a little bit of EH goes a long way.

The Bank Job - Loved it!  Loved the extras.  Loved the cast of actors I'd never seen before but would love to see again.  Simply fantastic!

I'm waiting to borrow Chinatown from my son because it's been many a year since I saw it.  After reading a review on a new biography of Roman Polanski, it perked my interest.  I think it's time.  That will be our next film.

Unless the movie has some kind of twist it has the biggest since the Icarus in Sunshine.

Booth, have you been holed up doing nothing but watching a large pile of DVDs lately?  Phew, that's a lot of movies!  Are you doing "even more a little more in-depth" reviews for some website somewhere?  What's the dealio?
