QUOTE:That as one of the things I didn't like. The cleverness that only sounded like someone trying too hard.
It's the reason I dislike many indies.

And this leads right into the last movie I've seen:

Big Nothing

Shaun of the Dead and Ross Geller team up in an indie that wants very much to be the Coen Brothers meets Tarantino. Plot threads that drop into oblivion, dialogue half as clever as it thinks it is, and a whole lot of "weird" stuff that doesn't really add up to anything. Sounds like an indie alright.
The performances aren't half bad for the material, with Simon Pegg pouring his comedic mannerisms into an American accent and Schwimmer kvetching in that way only he does.
The cinematography is way oversaturated, the colors reaching a Schumacherian lack of subtlety. The ending makes no sense.
All that said, I didn't hate it. But it tried way too hard to be "edgy" and "stylish".

1979- Alien, dir. Ridley Scott

It's also a movie taking place in the US, but it was shot in Canada and other places, which more often than not means you can reach for the big [SUCK] rubber stamp without even watching it.

I didn't mean it as a comment on Canada as such, but more on how when one country is used to play another, the movie is usually terrible.

Kinda like when Romania is meant to be Civil War south as in Cold Mountain...

Nostalghia & Zerkalo

I chose to watch these because of their (relative) brevity. And they still made me feel like I had ADD.
I will return to them when I feel more patient, I'm sure. Some very beautiful visual poetry.

Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

It boggles the mind that they would even think to follow this, nearly 20 years later. Not to say I won't be going right to the theater to see it.

Virtuosity

Brett Leonard is a master of portraying the cyberworld in cinema. Before this, he had made both the seminal Lawnmower Man and the non cyberworld related Hideaway.

I was happy to see his trademark shot of a huge cg face with an open mouth.

oh my gosh this is the longest thread ever!!!

I just wanted to say that but I guess I better continue and have a try.

Last movie I saw was:

Mr. and Mrs. Smith.

It features the sizzling hot (at the time of its' release) phenomena that spread across the globe, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, "affectionately" nicknamed Brangelina by the public. Oh yes, kiddies, this is the movie that started it all. Sizzling hot screen-chemistry, beating the crap out of each other and lots of battle of the sexes type stuff.  Mind you I do like this. a lot. that is about all since I don't want to give the plot away. Not that there is much of a plot because hey! It's brangelina! :D

Chungking Express:

Wonderful, magical film... this was my first Wong Kar-Wai film, and I had never heard of this particular film before, so it was a very new experience: exciting, fresh, and energetic. I loved everything about it: it's structure (which precedes Inarritu's Amores Perros), the characters and actors, it's incredible visual style, and it's amazing use of music. It really took me by surprise and just totally drew me in. One of those wonderful films you just want to go on and on... I very much look forward to seeing Kar-Wai's other films.

That god damn trailer's more popular than Uncle's Day in a whorehouse!

Oh man I'm actually quite jealous - I wish I could see Chungking again for the first time. All I can say is: try and watch the rest of his movies in chronological order, and try and do it fairly soon so you don't forget what you saw in all the other movies. Then, right at the end, watch 2046. That's pretty much what I did, and because I did it that way, 2046 remains one of the most rewarding cinematic experiences I've had in my whole life. It would help if you saw all of WKW's movies before you hit 2046, but at the very least, watch In the Mood for Love. If you liked the music of Chungking Express, there is a moment in 2046 which should blow your mind - it blew mine!

Anyhoo, I saw Funny Games U.S at the London Film Festival, and I stood about 4 feet away from a very stunning Naomi Watts - I was absolutely thrilled. She is superb as ever, and it is an excellent remake. In fact, if you haven't seen the original, I would suggest going straight for the remake, as I don't think it lost anything in translation, and it may even have gained a little.

Susan: glad you like Prime Suspect - I'm a fan too. I should point out though: it's British, but it isn't made by the BBC (not that this would affect its chances of being syndicated in any case - the BBC rather like getting piles of cash from overseas broadcasters!)

Has he taken his eyes off it yet?

With Prime Suspect 7, maybe I was thinking when I watched the television VHS tape on British Airways that it said a BBC program.  Hmm, I don't remember any more.

Well, guess what?  (Chris, you'll appreciate this.)  I went to a movie last night.  A movie in a movie theater!

The title is so bad that every time I say what it was we saw, I forget.  Before the Devil Knows You're Dead, is what I think it was.  Starring Ethan Hawke and Phillip Seymour Hoffman as brothers.  Albert Finney is their father.   The parents own a mom and pop jewelry store.  Marisa Tomei plays PSH's wife.  And the 80+ year old Sydney Lumet directed the film.  I won't give else anything away.  It's too much fun to follow the twists and turns.  It unscrolls in a non-linear chronology with each fresh scene revealing a bit more and surprising each step of the way.  I loved it! as Gene Shalit would say.  Good time pass the popcorn movie, as Joel Siegel used to say.  Well, maybe the latter isn't so true.  It's pretty dark.  The acting is stellar and I wouldn't be surprised to see some Oscar nominations from this film that seemed to have come out of nowhere. Anyone hear of it or see it?

You had me at Sidney Lumet. Actually, you had me with the cast, but the fool who told me about it said that the other Sidney directed it.

This is one of the reasons I missed this thread so much....Smokey, I love your taste in pretty much EVERYTHING....anyway, I so want to see this film!

As for one I just saw....The Departed

This was a fantastic film.  I know I was slow to see it but oh well, it was worth the wait.  I am finding myself becoming a Leonardo DiCarprio fan...I absolutely despised everythign he did (except for What's Eating Gilbert Grape?) but then I saw Cath Me If You Can and now this one, man, he's really fantastic in this.  I was really surprised how this one ended.  It's been a long time since I could say that I have been surprised with a movie and I was happily surprised with this one.....

Uh, was that fool  me? Just realized yesterday that I misidentified Sid (it has been corrected). Glad Susan enjoyed it so.  I'd also highly vote for Gone Baby Gone.

Grindhouse: Planet Terror

If you saw the poster and thought you'd like this, you'll probably be right.
I don't like Rose McGowan's line readings at all.

Rescue Dawn

Wolverines! Oh, wait, sorry.
Christian Bale is the Incredible Shrinking Man in this well-directed take on the prison escape genre (a true story, too). Steve Zahn appears in a film that isn't sh*t. Wow.

Miami Vice

This is pretty damn good. Not Collateral good, but surprising for a TV remake.

49up

The filmmakers latest film or chapter in the documented lives of a group Londoners. Every seven years the there is a new film update. 49up is seventh film so far the next will be called 56up and will be made in 2011. The film consists of the story of each of the people's lives from ages 7 to 49, men and women, the human life from themselves. The film is done very well and exposes the viewer to true humanity in purest form. At first I intrested by the films idea just to see it, but once I saw it, it seems I now look at myself different, and that rarely  happens.

Goodbye Mr. Chips (1939):

Wonderful film... sentimental but in a "It's A Wonderful Life" kind of way, the kind of sentimental that makes you feel happy and sad at the same time, not the kind that makes you roll your eyes. I could really relate because I feel similar to the young Mr. Chips in many ways, and aim to be a Latin professor, which is part of why I liked it so much, and maybe it's partly because of the holidays but this film really moved me; I loved it so much that normal criticism does not apply. However I did think the last third was weaker than the rest of the film, and wished the ending had been better. Features an amazing performance by Robert Donat and is surprisingly ambitious.

Stranger Than Fiction

The premise is good enough, too bad nothing interesting is done with it.
I liked the on-screen"graphics".

No Man of Her Own! fantastic film and one of Barbara Stanwyck's greatest performances. After Stella Dallas and Double Indemnity, I would put this one as her third best. She is the queen of film noir.

Boxing Helena

I finally got to see this film and I am proud I've done it. I just subscribed to a multimedia library in my city. They've an enormous amount of films in their original language and I don't get to pay almost anything. Through the list I just spot BH by J.C.Lynch and immediately took it, shoved it in the cased Tv-vcr-dvd set they have in the library, put on the headphones, cranked it and enjoyed it! Yeh, there are some things that seem a bit lame, but the overall result was very likeable for me. Sherilyn did a good job, as well as Julian Sands. I'm glad Madonna or Kim Basinger didn't do this movie, it wouldn't have been the same thing. I didn't get the ending very well, I should see it one more time to fully understand.

And I'm glad the girl is directing this new movie "Surveillance". I am willing to see that as well.
